Davy and I have been experimenting with producing our own Amadou and have found a great way to make it work effectively..It burns well and smoulders long and hot. You can see Davy blowing the tinder bundle to flame in these shots. This took considerably longer than normal as it was so cold Davy's breath was virtually condensing as soon as it left his lips resulting in the cooling of the tinder bundle and the slowing of it going to flame and far more dense smoke being produced, still, we are happy to inform, we did get it to work quite a few times, and we are now happy with our Amadou production method..The pics aren't great but you get the idea, ( I think I need a new camera!)
Actually the images are not too bad, well done. Try using a tinderbox, you will not waste so much tinder that way. You place the KINDLING dried grass bundle (or whatever you use)against the smouldering tinder in the tinderbox and blow it into flame. Close the lid to smother the smouldering tinder.
ReplyDeleteDid you use the Amadou as is, or did you char it or use saltpeter?

Phil done a great job in preparing the amadou before hand and I as usual get to try the results, The amadou worked really well but we found that it burned away very quickly maybe Phil used to much saltpeter when preparing it but all in all I was very pleased with the great results and it only goes to add another bit of knowledge to our kit for making fire when we need to.
ReplyDeleteThe photo's are great mate I will try to remember mine next time and your doing great work on the blog.
How did you actually make the amadou. I know its from horsehoof fungi, but can you describe the process.
